On Beaded Ground (2021)
April 21 - September 18, 2021
University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery
Victoria, British Columbia
“On Beaded Ground explores the essential role of Indigenous women’s creative practices in the reclamation and renewal of culture, identity, stories, and teachings. The beaded artworks in the exhibition carry stories. The materials, methods of making, designs and functions of beaded objects are languages particularly devised to transmit memories, legacies, and narratives between people across time and space.
This selection of works reflects the current proliferation of artists beading on the west coast and explores practices past and present.” - Lorilee Wastasecoot, Curator
Artists included: Margaret August, Daphne Boyer, Ceder Circle Indigenous Leadership Group, Maxine Matilpi, Bev Koski, Lynette Lafontaine, Nicole Mandryk, Audie Murray, Teresa Vander Meer-Chasse, and Estrella Whetung.
I presented ten artworks, six of which were created for this exhibition. My antler piece, Sisters (2017) was exhibited for the third time since it’s creation. The Raven (2018) made yet another appearance in exhibition, as well as my feather jacket Niisuu Disguised as Naltsi (2020). Rainbow (2017/2021) hubcap was finally completed after a four year hiatus. And the exhibition saw the newly created Horse Power (2021), Shnaa Wueek (2021), and four feather cases.
A big thank you to Lorilee Wastasecoot and the Legacy Art Gallery staff for inviting me to exhibit and taking such good care of my works. A special thank you to Kyra Kordoski for sharing these wonderful photos of my work. And finally, to the other artists for sharing space with me and making me feel so much love and admiration.
